Popular DJ and music producer Nkosinathi “Black Coffee” Maphumulo, through his Black Coffee Foundation, has taken action to help families in Mthatha affected by the devastating floods in the Eastern Cape. The foundation launched a call for donations, and thanks to generous contributions from companies and individuals, they managed to raise an impressive R500,000.

According to eNCA, at least 90 people died in last week’s severe floods, with rescue teams still searching for missing persons. The floods swept through homes and communities, leaving thousands with nothing. President Cyril Ramaphosa called the event a “catastrophic disaster” caused by climate change. Floodwaters in some areas reached up to four meters high, destroying homes, roads, and public facilities.

The Eastern Cape government confirmed that 30 of the victims were children, including six who were on a school bus that got swept away by the rushing water. Only three students survived by clinging to trees. Over 2,600 people have been left homeless and are currently staying in temporary shelters.

The Black Coffee Foundation expressed deep gratitude to everyone who donated. In a heartfelt message, they wrote:

“From the bottom of our hearts – thank you. Your kindness helped us raise R500,000 for families affected by the floods in Mthatha. This means access to essentials, dignity, and a sense of comfort for those who’ve lost so much. We couldn’t have done it without you. Please continue to support — every contribution still makes a difference.”

They also shared a moving update from the ground: “Yesterday we walked with Mthatha again. Starting in Link, ending in Trako, Slovo — we brought essentials and left with stories that remind us why this matters. The impact of the floods hasn’t faded. Neither should the support.”

The foundation has been handing out food, clothes, and other essentials at Northcrest Hall in Mthatha.

“We’re distributing essentials to those affected by the floods — people who have lost their homes, their sense of safety, and in some cases… their loved ones,” they said.

Companies like Unilever, Hollywoodbets, Nando’s, and Sompire, along with many individuals, stepped up to help. The outpouring of support shows the power of unity in difficult times.

Ramaphosa noted that while winter weather can be harsh in South Africa, this kind of flooding is unusual. Coastal areas, especially in the Eastern Cape, were hit by “unprecedented” weather.

As search teams continue to look for missing people, the community and organisations like The Black Coffee Foundation are bringing hope to those who have lost almost everything.
