Model, mental health advocate, and Miss South Africa 2020, Shudufhadzo Musida, recently marked a special milestone — five years since she was crowned Miss South Africa.
The 62nd edition of the Miss South Africa pageant took place on 24 October 2020 at The Table Bay Hotel in Cape Town, where Shudufhadzo made history and captured the hearts of South Africans with her intelligence, grace, and advocacy for mental health.
Reflecting on her journey, Shudu shared a heartfelt message on social media:
“I can’t believe it’s been 5 years since I was crowned Miss South Africa. Thank you to everyone who’s supported my journey from then until now. I’m so blessed to call you my village. The last slide brought me to tears — the village that raised me, celebrating me. And to my Uncle Oscar, who gave me a lesson in self-belief the day before the finale. He said, ‘If you believe the crown is yours, then it is yours. But if you believe it’s not, then it’s not. No one can do the believing for you — no matter how badly we want it for you.’”
She also shared touching clips from the night before her big day, showing her excitement and nerves. In one video, she said,
“I feel very calm, I feel very confident. We are doing dress rehearsals right now which is super exciting. I’m just praying in God’s promises for me. I prayed. I feel good.”
One of the most emotional moments she posted was a video of her family jumping up and down with joy after hearing her name announced as Miss South Africa 2020 — a moment that remains close to her heart.
Five years later, Shudu continues to inspire many. She has completed her first year at Columbia University in New York City, where she is pursuing a master’s degree in international affairs.
In August, she also launched her very own podcast, Mindful Mondays with Shudu, where she shares open and comforting conversations about mental health.
“It’s less about definitions of mental health and more about the daily experience — the quiet battles, breakthroughs, and conversations,” she explained.
From beauty queen to global scholar and advocate, Shudufhadzo Musida continues to shine, reminding everyone that true beauty lies in purpose, growth, and compassion.
