Idols SA won’t be the only show returning. Mphela revealed that Primedia Studios and Opulent Entertainment Group have joined forces in a collaboration to co-produce South African versions of top talent shows.
He said, “Primedia Studios has signed a collaboration deal with Opulent Entertainment Group, and as part of the deal, the pair will co-produce South African versions of talent shows. According to the press release, we are set to see Idols SA, The Voice SA, as well as Project Runway SA return to our screens.”
While fans are excited, Mphela noted that the shows might not appear on the same channels they used to. He hinted at new platforms, saying, “While those titles may return, it doesn’t mean they will be on the same platforms they were before — Idols SA may end up on Netflix or SABC and not Mzansi Magic.”
Mphela shared his personal excitement for the revival, even as he hopes for more original South African content in the future:
“I love and miss family-friendly television. I’m all in. It would be nice to try and produce original South African concepts, but my emo-tainment and telenovelas fatigue means I’m happy to take this.”
Viewers can expect a mix of familiar faces and new talent, as Idols SA, The Voice SA, and Project Runway SA return to prime-time viewing. This collaboration signals a new chapter for South African television—one that blends nostalgia with fresh talent competitions. For many, it’s a welcome revival of the family-friendly shows the country has long missed.
