Penny Lebyane Details How She Got Taken Off e.tv’s Sunrise After 3 Years! A few days ago e.tv announced a new breakfast show called The Morning Show SA which has replaced Sunrise.
TV host Penny Lebyane has hosted Sunrise for the past three years and it didn’t end ell for the star. Penny recently spoke to Sowetan telling the publication how her contract negotiations were handled badly, accusing the channel of poor communication.
“In January I started hearing that they were looking for new presenters and I resigned myself to the fact that my contract would not be renewed,” she told Sowetan.
“I came to work and found my access card was blocked, but I asked security to let me in. My make-up team was not there, my clothes removed, so I went on air with my own clothes. It has happened before.
“At 5.10am, before the show, the GM Marlon Davids called me to ask: ‘why are you there?’, ‘you’re not supposed to be there’. But I reminded him that they hadn’t answered my questions about the terms of my new contract. I work with a team. I told him that he was causing trouble and being divisive,” she added.
Penny says she knew about the new show and wishes the new team all the best although she refuses to be disrespected by the company.
“People in management are hypocrites and they treat people like slaves. There were racial prejudice and undertones so condescending but that’s not my place.
“They can’t say the show wasn’t performing well because of me, hell no. Or that it wasn’t making money, I know that for an outside broadcast it could make R1.2-million at a go.”
Lebyane currently hosts Let’s Talk Papgeld, a spin-off of the No Excuse, Pay Papgeld show on Moja Love. She has another show, Marriage Case in the works.
