Actress, TV host, and MC Nomalanga Shozi is stepping into the spotlight like never before. For the first time in her acting career, Nomalanga will play the lead role in a brand-new drama series called Black Gold, set to premiere on BET Africa.
The series, which is co-produced by Black Brain Pictures and BET, will air from 18 August, Monday to Thursday at 18:30 on DStv Channel 129.
Nomalanga plays the character of Amandla Zungu, a strong and determined young woman whose life is turned upside down when she is wrongly blamed for her father’s death. Betrayed by her own stepmother Florence, Amandla is cast out of her family home and forced to survive in the dangerous world of illegal mining.
Amandla’s journey is full of danger, strength, and growth. She rises through the ranks in the mining underworld, determined to reclaim her legacy and confront the people who took everything from her. Florence, played by legendary actress Dawn Thandeka King, is the mastermind behind Amandla’s downfall. Florence is secretly working with her lover, Tom Motsepe, who is played by Sello Maake KaNcube.

The series is set in KwaZulu-Natal and promises to be gripping and full of twists. According to TV with Thinus, Black Gold will show viewers a story of pain, betrayal, strength, and triumph.
Mandla N, executive director at Black Brain Pictures, shared his excitement about the project. He said, “Creating Black Gold was a game-changing experience – it shook us as much as it will shake the audience.” He added that working with BET is more than just making a show – it’s about “reinvesting in our industry, breaking barriers, and taking a bold step forward for local storytelling.”
Monde Twala, senior vice president of Paramount Africa and BET International, described the show as “a celebration of African storytelling at its finest – rich in culture, layered in emotion, and driven by a stellar cast that brings these powerful characters to life.”
Twala added, “Black Gold is a tribute to black resilience, black love, and the unbreakable spirit of our communities.”
