Award-winning South African actress Nambitha Ben-Mazwi has added another major international achievement to her career by joining the cast of Tatort, Germany’s longest-running crime series, which first debuted in 1970. Known for her impressive roles in popular shows like Savage Beauty on Netflix, Happiness Ever After, and Empini on Showmax, Nambitha has always showcased her range as an actress. However, her latest project presents an entirely new challenge: acting in Swiss German, a language she had never spoken before.
In Tatort, Nambitha portrays Moya, a young bicycle courier living illegally in Zurich. Moya becomes entangled in a gripping crime when she witnesses the violent beating of a young man, whose body is later discovered in the Limmat River. As the only witness to the crime, Moya holds key information that could help solve the case. But her knowledge comes at a high cost—if she comes forward, she risks being deported since she is living in Switzerland without legal papers. This puts Moya in a complex moral and existential dilemma, as she is torn between helping the police and protecting her own safety. As the criminals target Moya to prevent her from speaking out, the two detectives working on the case face a challenging task: how do you protect a witness who doesn’t officially exist?
In an interview with True Love, Nambitha expressed her excitement at landing the role and reflected on the unexpected nature of the opportunity. “If you had told me this time last year that I would find myself on a Swiss German-speaking film set, in the heart of Switzerland, starring and acting in Swiss German, I would not have fathomed that,” she said. “To be chosen after a global casting that first took place in Europe, then extended to Africa, and finally be the one chosen for this role is an honor. It’s a testament that a role truly chooses you.”
Nambitha also shared how deeply she connected with the character of Moya, saying, “I knew the moment I received the brief that this character of Moya was one that will heal many and bring about social awareness, and I was moved by it. I knew right then and there, I had to get it.”
Taking on the challenge of learning Swiss German was no small feat for Nambitha, but it highlights her dedication to her craft and her versatility as an actress. The role is not only a significant career milestone but also an inspiring example of what can be achieved through hard work, passion, and a commitment to learning new skills.
Nambitha’s international journey serves as an inspiration to aspiring actors everywhere. Her story proves that with perseverance and a willingness to step outside your comfort zone, incredible opportunities can arise, no matter where you start or where you come from.
