On September 24, 2024, the prestigious Earthshot Prize Innovation Summit took place at The Plaza Hotel in New York, marking Climate Week with a powerful call for climate solutions. Hosted in partnership with Bloomberg Philanthropies, the summit brought together global leaders, business executives, and innovators to tackle one of the world’s most pressing issues: repairing and regenerating our planet.

Founded by HRH Prince William, The Earthshot Prize is a global environmental challenge that seeks to accelerate impactful solutions for climate action. This year’s event, held against the backdrop of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, featured high-profile speakers, including South African broadcaster and businesswoman Bonang Matheba.

Matheba took center stage at 10:50 am for the “Spotlight African Innovation” segment, moderating a compelling discussion between Cameroonian-American NBA star Joel Embiid and Nigerian-Canadian Toronto Raptors President Masai Ujiri. The trio discussed the unique opportunities and challenges Africa faces in scaling up climate transformation, emphasising the continent’s vibrant culture and creative spirit.

Matheba’s hosting skills quickly became a highlight on social media. On X, @Dr Chauke, impressed by her natural command of the conversation, tweeted a video snippet with the caption, “Bonang Matheba hosts Bloomberg’s significant discussion and you can tell she’s not reading. A Queen @Bonang.”

Others echoed the sentiment on X, with one user commenting, “If you are meant for something, it will show,” while another added, “Ow, she was born for this.”

Matheba’s  insightful moderation once again proved her versatility, showcasing her ability to shine on a global platform and further solidifying her role as an international icon.
