Popular TV personality Boity Thulo stood alongside thousands of South Africans on Friday, 21 November 2025, for the G20 Women’s Shutdown organised by the NGO Women for Change. The nationwide shutdown aimed to highlight the ongoing crisis of gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) in South Africa, a cause that continues to affect women and families every day.
In the days leading up to the event, many South African celebrities changed their social media profile pictures to purple, the official colour of Women for Change’s anti-GBVF campaign. But Boity chose to go beyond online support and joined the physical protest in Johannesburg, showing her commitment to raising awareness.
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. We march for every woman who couldn’t. South African women are shutting it down for the ones who never made it home. 💜💜💜💜💜💜✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾💜💜💜💜💜💜💜#WomensShutDown pic.twitter.com/sMTJvwezJk

On her official X (Twitter) account, Boity posted photos of herself at Emmarentia Dam, located inside the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens. She captioned her post with a powerful message:
“ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. We march for every woman who couldn’t. South African women are shutting it down for the ones who never made it home.

#WomensShutDown”
In the pictures, Boity can be seen taking part in a symbolic “lie down” — a peaceful but emotional act done across the country from 12:00 p.m. to 12:15 p.m. These lie downs were meant to honour the 15 women who lose their lives every day due to gender-based violence. Participants lay on the ground to represent those who never made it home and to demand change from authorities and society.
Boity wasn’t the only well-known figure showing support. Music artist, presenter, and media personality Anele Zondo also shared her participation on social media. She posted a heartfelt message expressing why she joined the shutdown:
“I am a Mother, an auntie, a sister, a daughter and a friend. I am a human more than just a number. I am a woman! We are not asking for more, we demand the basics. The freedom to live without fear of JUST being a woman. Today I stood with @womenforchangesa to say enough is enough. In fact we laid down to pay our respects to the women whose lives have been laid to rest due to the issue of femicide in this country. My purple heart is for solidarity. For change. For hope.”
Reality TV star Angel also joined the march, participating in the Durban leg of the shutdown. Sharing pictures from the event, she wrote:
“Durban we did it. South Africa we did it. We stood in solidarity against gender based violence and successfully declared the matter as a national crisis. Let this not be end of our fight.”
With public figures like Boity, Anele, and Angel joining thousands of ordinary South Africans, the message was clear: South Africa has had enough, and the fight for women’s safety will not stop.
