Actress and filmmaker Bahumi Mhlongo is stepping confidently into her own spotlight. The talented daughter of media personality Somizi Mhlongo is proving that she’s not just a star kid — she’s a rising star in her own right. Her latest film, Loved Out, is proof of her talent and dedication to her craft.

In an interview with Drum, Bahumi opened up about her journey in the entertainment industry and how she’s working hard to build her own name. Many may assume her success is tied to her famous parents, but she’s quick to set the record straight.

“I’m not living in anybody’s shadow, I put in the work,” she told Drum confidently.

In Loved Out, Bahumi takes on the role of Ruva, a determined woman fighting to save her family’s restaurant. The film beautifully blends humor and emotion, showcasing Bahumi’s ability to bring depth and strength to her characters.

“Playing this role was challenging for me, but it was a good challenge. I thoroughly had fun playing Ruva, she is a strong woman, who doesn’t back down from a challenge,” she shared. “I love being challenged by the characters I play.”

While many young actors dream of starring in daily soapies, Bahumi says she’s not ready to take that path — at least not yet.

“At this stage of my career, I’m not ready for that yet,” she explained. “I’m not keen to do that just yet, because at the moment I’m enjoying doing what I’m doing. If I ever had to do a daily drama, the character would have to speak to me and what I stand for as an actor.”

Despite her growing fame, Bahumi remains grounded and driven by her spiritual beliefs.

“My faith keeps me grounded, I’m not doing this for fame or for any other reason for that matter other than the fact that I love it and I want to do it for as long as I can,” she said.

She also acknowledged that the entertainment industry comes with its challenges, but she remains focused on her goals.

“I would like to do more romantic films and dramedy, but when it comes to approaching intimate scenes, I tap into my faith, which guides me as to which roles to take after reading the script,” she explained. “I’m very aware of the challenges associated with the industry.”

With her talent, determination, and grounded nature, Bahumi Mhlongo is clearly carving out her own path — one powerful role at a time.
