Actress Gugu Gumede is stepping into a powerful new role in Netflix’s upcoming drama The Polygamist, which is set to premiere on Friday, 12 June 2026. While the series promises to explore the complexities of love, power and relationships, the project also holds a deeply personal meaning for the actress.

Gugu will portray Joyce Gomora, a woman whose seemingly perfect life hides a much deeper and emotional reality. The drama follows Jonasi Gomora, a wealthy and powerful banking CEO whose seemingly perfect life begins to unravel as the four women in his life — his wife, a secret second wife, his mistress and his girlfriend — fight for his wealth and affection. Through its compelling storyline, the series explores the consequences of one man’s choices and how they affect the women around him.

Ahead of the show’s release, Gugu took to Instagram to share a touching story about her late mother and her family’s connection to polygamy. Her personal reflection gave fans a glimpse into why the themes of The Polygamist resonate so strongly with her.

Gugu wrote, “To He who is faithful to keep His promises, I say “Thank You Father”.

“My mother was a product of polygamy; then as a young woman in politics, she met my father – a polygamist. She fell in love and had two children with him. Although they remained great friends until his passing, she had ultimately decided that polygamy was not for her, and had married someone else.”

The actress went on to explain that the subject of polygamy has many layers, particularly in South Africa, and that stories surrounding it are often told from a male perspective.

“There are so many layers to this subject, especially in South Africa; but we often see it being told from a man’s perspective. In this show, we see how the choices of one man affected all those around him, especially the women in his life. We also come to see how the women ultimately take back their power. This has been the role of a lifetime.”

For Gugu, the series is more than just another acting role. It is an opportunity to tell a story that reflects realities many families have experienced while highlighting the resilience and strength of women.

The actress also expressed gratitude to Netflix South Africa for trusting her with the role.

“Thank you so much to @netflixsa – I feel your love and support immensely. Thank you for the opportunity.”

She did not forget to acknowledge the cast and crew who worked tirelessly to bring the production to life.

“To my fellow castmates and crew, a standing ovation! It’s like someone held a gun to your heads and forced you to perform at your absolute optimum, and you did it. You did it! Well done. Just one more day!”

As excitement builds ahead of the premiere of The Polygamist, Gugu’s heartfelt reflection about her late mother has added another layer of meaning to the project. Through both her personal story and her portrayal of Joyce Gomora, the actress hopes to shine a light on the experiences of women navigating the complicated realities of polygamy.
