Award-winning DJ and radio presenter Lerato Kganyago has joined many South Africans in mourning the tragic death of former Y FM media personality and DJ Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras. The respected radio personality’s passing has sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry and left many heartbroken.
DJ Warras’ death was confirmed by the South African Police Service (SAPS) on Tuesday. Gauteng police spokesperson Captain Tinswalo Sibeko revealed that the 40-year-old was fatally shot in Johannesburg Central, just as the country was celebrating Reconciliation Day. According to reports, the former 5FM presenter and Cliff Central jock was allegedly approached by three gunmen who opened fire on him while he was parking his vehicle in the Johannesburg CBD on Tuesday.
The tragic incident has left his family, friends, colleagues and fans struggling to come to terms with the loss. In a statement shared with TshisaLIVE on Wednesday, the Stock family expressed deep pain and disbelief following his death. They described how difficult it has been to process the sudden loss of someone who meant so much to them.
“The senseless nature of his passing has left his family devastated, broken and struggling to imagine a world without him. A devoted son, a loving and proud father, a cherished brother and uncle, Warrick, 40, was the heart and anchor of his family.
Affectionately known as DJ Warras, also known as ‘The Shady Lurker’, he brought light, laughter and strength into every space he occupied. His influence and kindness extended far beyond his home, and he was deeply loved by his friends, colleagues, and the wider South African entertainment community,” they said.
DJ Warras leaves behind his three young children, his mother and his siblings. His passing has highlighted the deep impact he had not only within his family but also across the radio and music space, where he built a strong reputation for his talent, consistency and character.
Lerato Kganyago also shared her personal tribute, remembering DJ Warras not just as a colleague, but as a close friend and adviser. Taking to social media, Lerato reflected on the bond they shared and the support he gave her over the years.
She shared, “I’m sorry my friend, you stayed consistent over the years, always a brother and a great adviser. I love you forever Warrick.”
