For weeks, viewers across the country rallied behind their favourite shows in an exciting public competition. In the end, Isibaya won the hearts of many, securing a massive 23.1% of the total votes. This overwhelming support has brought the iconic series back to screens, starting Monday, 22 September, at 6:30pm on Mzansi Magic.
The fan-driven campaign allowed viewers to decide which shows had the biggest impact on them over the years. Right from the start, Isibaya led the race, proving that its legacy is still alive and strong. Known for its gripping storylines about taxi wars, family rivalries, and deep-rooted isiZulu traditions, Isibaya was never just a telenovela—it was a cultural phenomenon.
Shirley Adonisi, Director of Local Entertainment Channels at M-Net, praised the show’s impact, saying: “Isibaya was more than just a TV show, it was a cultural phenomenon that had its finger on the pulse of Mzansi local television. As we celebrate 15 years of Mzansi Magic, it warms our hearts to see our audiences celebrating the stories that became a part of their lives. This recognition is theirs, our viewers who have been with us from day one on this journey.”
The voting also showed just how much South Africans love local television. The River came in second with 15.5% of votes, followed by The Queen with 12.8%.
Isibaya first hit TV screens on 18 March 2013 and ran for eight successful seasons until April 2021. Over the years, it introduced audiences to unforgettable characters and some of Mzansi’s brightest stars, including Bheki Mkhwane (Samson Ndlovu), Siyabonga Thwala (Mpiyakhe Zungu), Nomzamo Mbatha (Thandeka Zungu), and Sdumo Mtshali (S’busiso Ndlovu).
With its return, South Africans can look forward to reliving the drama, the culture, and the unforgettable storytelling that made Isibaya a household favourite. The countdown to September 22 has already begun, and fans couldn’t be more excited.
