Married at First Sight South Africa has kept viewers glued to their screens for 11 weeks straight, and the drama just keeps building. Airing every Sunday at 6PM on Mzansi Magic and streaming on Showmax, the show follows four couples navigating married life with strangers in real time:
- Palesa Mphaki & Tshepo Miya
- Makoto Phumodi & Nkuleleko Mahlangu
- Themba Khosa & Nelisa Ntabeni
- Portia Baloyi & Bongani Luvalo
In the latest emotional episode, fans saw Portia and Bongani share a vulnerable conversation about grief, following the passing of Portiaâs father. It was a moment that reminded viewers this isnât just TVâitâs real people, real marriages, and real emotions.
We caught up with Bongani Luvalo, who opened up about why he joined the show, his journey with Portia, and the lessons heâs learning along the way.
Why did you decide to join the show?
âI joined Married at First Sight to try a different approach in finding a wife, to cut out options and see if one can meet a person whoâs committed to the institution of marriage. I was tired of the outside noise and was intentional in giving my all to building a marriage, family and a home.â
When you first saw Portia, what went through your mind?
âWhen I first saw my wife, I thought âit doesnât get more real than thisâ.â
How did you emotionally prepare yourself for this experiment?
âI generally live in therapy⊠itâs a tool I need in the journey of life. My therapist and I drew scenarios and approached them, but it still took a toll on me. Therapy gave me a toolbox I use whenever Iâm challenged.â
On dealing with Portiaâs grief
âThe passing of Portiaâs dad was tough. I couldnât fully be there for her. Traditionally, I wasnât seen as a husband yet, and I had to leave the country for two weeks. It was difficult.â
On staying calm in the chaos
âIâve learned to know when something is about me or not. Peopleâs actions arenât always a reflection of who we are. I donât take things personally, and I know when to step back and return with less emotion.â
Which couple does he believe in (besides his own)?
âI would say Nelisa and Themba. They came with intention, and they approach each day with respect and the benefit of the doubt.â
Lessons learned
âThis experiment has cemented that I love love, and that I still have work to do in dealing with abandonment and rejection.â
On being recognised in public
âYes, people are starting to recognise me as the guy from MAFS. Most get my name wrong but theyâre friendly, supportive, and want to see our marriage succeed.â
Why viewers should keep watching
âPeople should continue watching because itâs a relatable story of how people grow into each other. There are still more ups and downs that will test the marriage, and it canât unfold without the viewers witnessing it.â
With more twists and turns ahead, itâs clear that Bongani and Portiaâs journey is only just beginning. Will their marriage survive the challengesâor crumble under the weight of reality? Fans will have to tune in every Sunday at 6PM on Mzansi Magic or catch up on Showmax to find out.
