South African YouTuber and media personality Lasizwe Dambuza is officially back on DStv, and fans are buzzing. The 27-year-old star took to Instagram to share the exciting news, posting:
“GUESS WHO’S BACK ON DSTV? (Last Slide, is the mood!) An AWKWARD DATES SPECIAL EDITION on Mzansi Magic!”
While it’s not yet clear if this marks a permanent return of Awkward Dates to the channel, many are thrilled to see Lasizwe back on screen. The special edition of Awkward Dates aired on Mzansi Magic, signaling what might be a fresh start for the content creator and the show.
Earlier this year in July, it was reported that Lasizwe’s contract with broadcasting giant MultiChoice had come to an end. His popular show, Awkward Dates, which originally found fame on YouTube, was picked up by DStv for a Saturday night slot earlier this year. However, the partnership faced complications.
According to City Press, Awkward Dates was reportedly set to be removed from DStv after some guests expressed concerns about their interviews being aired on television without proper consent. These guests claimed they had only agreed to be featured on YouTube and social media platforms, not on national television. Some even said they expected to be paid for TV appearances, which allegedly didn’t happen.
One guest, content creator Dominic Zaca, openly criticized Lasizwe and his team. Zaca accused them of violating both written and verbal agreements, saying his episode—which was the first to air on Mzansi Magic—was broadcast without his full consent.
“What I understand is that you guys breached a verbal contract. You breached a written contract,” Zaca said.
“I don’t know what contract you gave to MultiChoice because I would think MultiChoice would not air my episode knowing full well that I did not sign that contract in full agreement.”
Back in March, MultiChoice had announced Lasizwe as one of eight young content creators they were partnering with to bring fresh and youthful content to DStv. His show, Awkward Dates, which features him interviewing people about their most cringe-worthy dating stories, was even nominated for a SA Film and Television Award.
