This past weekend was all about glitz, glamour, and the celebration of women in music as the Basadi in Music Awards returned for its fourth year. Known for honoring women who make a powerful impact in the music industry, the awards promise to be bigger, bolder, and even more meaningful this year.
The 2025 Basadi in Music Awards officially took place on 1 and 2 August 2025 at the iconic Joburg Theatre. The theme for this year was “The Symphony of Harmony,” which celebrates the power, diversity, and unity of women in South African music. It’s all about showing that women are not just part of the music scene—they are shaping it.
This weekend’s celebration saw some of the biggest names in music walk away with top honors. One of the night’s biggest winners was Zee Nxumalo, who took home the Sofnfree Africa Artist of the Year award for her hit song Ngisakuthanda. The organisers praised her by saying: “Celebrating the Mosadi who embodies excellence, creativity, and star power—an artist whose music, impact, and presence define what it means to shine effortlessly!”
Another big win went to Babalwa M, crowned Amapiano Artist of the Year for her track Bothatha. The tribute to her read: “Celebrating the Mosadi whose smooth beats and infectious rhythms have taken the world by storm. She’s the queen of the Amapiano vibe, bringing soulful energy to every track.”
Lamiez Holworthy showed why she’s a force behind the decks, winning DJ of the Year. The Basadi team honored her, saying: “Celebrating the Mosadi who owns the decks and keeps the world dancing! Her beats, energy, and talent turn every set into an unforgettable experience.”
Hip-hop powerhouse Gigi Lamayne walked away with Hip Hop Artist of the Year, proving that rap has a queen. The awards celebrated her as: “The Mosadi spitting bars, breaking limits, and owning the streets and the stage.”
The award for Collaboration of the Year went to Cici and Liyema Pantsi for their hit Impumelelo. Their partnership was described as: “Celebrating the power of unity in music! This award honors the artists whose combined talents created a track that captured hearts and topped playlists.”
Finally, Naledi Aphiwe earned Afro-Pop Artist of the Year, praised for her vibrant sound that brings African stories to life. Her music was described as something that “moves hearts, moves feet, and carries the soul of the continent.”
