Zakes Mda Calls Out Nomzamo Mbatha For “Imaginary” African Accent On Coming 2 America. Since the premier of Coming 2 America, fans have been singing Nomzamo praises for her acting, but award winning poet and author Zakes Mda feels like Mbatha didn’t tick all the boxes for him.

Nomzamo plays the role of Mirembe, whom is a young royal groomer in the fictional African kingdom of Zamunda. Although Zamo’s performance left a lasting impression to some of the most wordy celebrities, not everyone was wowed by her delivery of the role.

According to Zakes, Nomzamo’s accent in the movie is pointing out that portraying accents for actors can be a tricky situation which happened to be the case for the former Isibaya actress.

Mda shared that he was not a fan of Nomzamo’s accent in the film which quickly became a subject matter after the premier of the movie on March 5th 2021.

Critics who watched the movie including Zakes are confused as to why Mbatha did not speak in her original South African accent, opting to go for the generic American portrayal of an East African accent.

“For some reason, the actress had to change her South African accent, which is African, into something else that she and her director imagined to be an “African accent” in keeping with the “African accents” of the African American actors” he said.

A tweet came to the actresses defence suggesting that the accent could be inaccurate because the land of Zamunda is imaginary, but Mda seems to think otherwise.

““I mean, I would go along with that explanation if this was an imaginary accent for an imaginary country But it’s a generic accent that African Americans use when they play African characters whether they’re Ugandan, Nigerian or SAn (South Africans)”, he said.
