Showmax has officially dropped the much-anticipated trailer for Season 3 of Youngins, the record-breaking teen drama that still holds the title for the most first-day views of any series on the African streamer since its relaunch. The final season will start streaming on 19 September 2025, with three new episodes dropping each week.
As the series gears up for its big farewell, Showmax caught up with the powerhouse behind its dynamic casting – actress and casting director Keneilwe Matidze. Not only has she worked her magic behind the scenes, but she also steps in front of the camera as the vibrant Life Orientation teacher, Pearl. With credits that include other hit Showmax Originals like Adulting, Outlaws, and Law, Love & Betrayal, Keneilwe shared what it was like to assemble such an energetic, authentic teen cast from Seasons 1 to 3.
When asked if she expected Youngins to become such a massive hit, Keneilwe didn’t hesitate. “Honestly, yes! During auditions, the energy was electric. Kids showed up from 8am to 8pm, and despite the long hours, we all ended up dancing together outside. That vibe was infectious. I thought, ‘If I were watching, I’d be hooked!’ The talent was off the charts, and the story, as pitched by Tshedza Productions, promised something special. Everyone was fully invested.”
One standout is Tumelo, played by Lebogang Lephotsoana. “We needed triple threats – kids who could act, sing, and dance. Lebo was always dancing, full of life and positivity. Tumelo is the glue in the friendship group, and Lebo naturally fits that role,” she said. “He’s collaborative, contagious with his energy, and even helped me keep up with TikTok slang and dance moves! He started with raw talent and grew into a fantastic actor.”
Mahlatse, portrayed by Thabiso Ramotshela, brought a deep emotional layer to the show. “Thabiso’s intensity matched Mahlatse’s journey perfectly. He pushed himself so hard that I worried about him at times! But he was a trooper, and his dedication made Mahlatse’s struggles feel real and relatable.”
The cast also shines in their representation of diverse experiences. On queer representation, Keneilwe said, “We worked hard on chemistry tests but with Tabile Tau (Sefako) and Lebo, the connection was natural. Intimacy on screen is tough for anyone, regardless of sexuality, but these two were open, comfortable, and committed to telling the story authentically.”
Some casting choices were unforgettable. Katlego Moloke, who plays Alex, initially auditioned for Tumelo’s role. “I mistakenly thought he was a girl. He said, ‘Yeah, but Tumelo is gay, and I’m gay.’ That moment humbled me and reminded me how much South Africa has changed. Katlego shaped Alex into a character I hadn’t originally envisioned.”
Speaking on Amo, played by Amogelang Telekelo, Keneilwe shared, “Playing a teenager who considers herself sexually emancipated can be daunting, but Amo handled her role with immense grace. I truly had fun working with such talented young people.”
Fans can expect heartfelt moments, laughter, and plenty of drama as Youngins wraps up its story. The countdown begins for the final chapter — streaming from 19 September 2025 on Showmax.
