Uzalo’s Gugu Gumede On Her Keeping Her Twang Away From Mamlambo! If you follow Gugu Gumede on Instagram you already know she looks and sounds very differently from her character on Uzalo.

Gugu loves makeup, has a great sense of style and that American twang she says she developed whilst she lived there for many years as a student.

In a recent interview, Gugu shared how she makes sure she doesn’t bring her twang into her character on Uzalo where she plays the role of a much older woman.

“There’s no place for my twang when I play Mamlambo. I don’t play Mamlambo with an accent. In fact, I don’t even speak Zulu like Mamlambo,” she said.

On whether she has lost roles because of her accent, Gugu says, “It has never prevented me from getting any roles because I am able to speak in many dialects and so when I get into character it goes away. Normally when you audition for a role you have to go into the audition in character.”
