Former Kaya 959 presenter Unathi Nkayi has finally decided it’s time to tell her side of the story.

Unathi was fired from the popular Johannesburg-based radio station in 2021 after an alleged altercation with fellow presenter Sizwe Dhlomo. Following her dismissal, she took Kaya 959 to court. Now, she’s preparing to open up about what really happened — but in her own way.

In a video she posted, Unathi shared that she is ready for battle.

“My mother has instructed me and given me the blessing to tell my side of the story,” she said. “I have asked her to allow me to do it officially at the end of my case with Kaya at the High Court. Because my mother has made that request and said no one should have the right to tell my story without me, I’ve given her that promise.”

Unathi revealed that she is working on a documentary where she will tell everything.

“Through our production company, we’ve started shooting my documentary that I’m producing as well. I promise I’ll tell you everything at the end of my case and I’ll share all the documents, and you’ll finally get both sides of the story,” she said.

Since 2021, the radio presenter and singer has received a lot of support from the public.

“I just want to say thank you to every single one of you who randomly pulls me aside or just makes the announcement that I have the courage to take on a corporate,” Unathi said. “Thank you to all the ladies at the sauna, people who stop me at the gym, people who stop me at airports or groove after I perform and say they hope I’ll see the case through.”

She added that some powerful people have supported her through this journey.

“I have some very powerful and wealthy people who have backed me up to say they’re not going to allow me to not see this through, that finances won’t be an issue — and they aren’t,” Unathi said.

The media personality made it clear that she is ready for whatever lies ahead.

“The worst has happened. They have humiliated me; they have destroyed me. I’ve lost copious amounts of money because of what happened. So, the worst has happened to me already. I’m ready now for the legal battle because I believe in our Constitution, and I know it’s one of the most powerful Constitutions in the world,” she said.

When she was dismissed in 2021, Kaya 959 said in a statement:

“Ms Nkayi’s contract has ended prematurely due to certain conduct that rendered the relationship intolerable going forward. Kaya 959 can confirm that certain incidents had occurred, which resulted in the breakdown of the trust relationship between the two parties. The business can further confirm that due process was followed.”

Speaking to Daily Sun, Unathi said she couldn’t reveal too much about her upcoming documentary just yet.

“I’ve started filming it — meetings with my lawyers, sessions with my therapist, and conversations with my business partners,” she said. “We’ve had to pause it for once we get a date from the High Court.”
