Grammy Award-winning South African star Tyla is officially back home. The singer took to Instagram last night to let her followers know she had touched down in Mzansi. She posted a location pin and kept it simple with just one word: “Chillin.” Along with that, she shared a picture of the springbok — South Africa’s national animal, as a nod to her roots.
On X (formerly Twitter), Tyla shared her thoughts on being back in the country, writing: “Whenever I get back to SA and my algorithm changes I feel like I’m catching up on a series.”

She also joined in on some of the fun trending on social media. Tyla admitted that she’s interested in learning the viral Khanyi Mbau dance, tweeting: “Need to learn that Khanyi Mbau dc.”

The trend she’s referring to started as an old throwback clip of Khanyi Mbau but quickly turned into a full TikTok sensation. Gen Z users were blown away by how iconic Khanyi has always been, even in her younger years. Inspired by her bold and unapologetic moves, fans created the “Khanyi Core” dance challenge, where people copy her unique style. The trend has spread fast and is now gaining massive popularity across social media platforms.
But alongside her lighthearted posts, Tyla also shared a heartbreaking update. Just yesterday, the singer revealed that her beloved grandmother had passed away. It is believed that Tyla’s return to South Africa may be linked to her grandmother’s funeral.
In an emotional tribute, Tyla expressed her deep love and appreciation for the woman who shaped much of who she is today. She wrote:
“I thank God for your presence in my life. Thank you for all the love and all the life stories you would tell me. You were always proud of your mother and called us royalty because of her. Thank you for teaching me about my Zulu heritage and making me the artist I am today. Your presence will forever be missed. The sweetest soul & I love you forever Gran.”
