Reality TV star, radio host, and now fashion entrepreneur Somizi Mhlongo is making waves in the fashion world. The multi-talented artist recently shared the exciting news that he is designing dresses for South African music legend Judith Sephuma. Judith is a multi-award-winning, multi-platinum selling jazz and Afro-pop singer whose career spans over two decades.
Sharing the news on Instagram, Somizi wrote, “Sometime I wish I cud see myself the way my friends see me. Coz when @judithsephuma asks me to design dresses for her upcoming album sleeve I’m like are u crazy. I’m still a student. And she insists. We are talking about thee Judith. Multi award winning platinum selling musician. With a career spanning over 2 decades. Well I had to tap into my fearlessness gear and take the risk. And it was worth it. Ty hanks to @masangobonginkosi for holding my hand through this experience. And thanks Judith for believing in me. Now I can’t wait to lay my hands on this album. She poured her heart and soul into it. Self produced and funded. Boss move.”
In a video shared on Instagram, Somizi showed fans every step of the design process and preparations for Judith’s album cover shoot. He explained, “@judithsephuma album cover shoot. This is what inspired me to launch SOMPIRE FEMME. We shot this in April. In June I was like there’s something here. I think I’m obsessed with dressing women. Album dropping tomorrow, please get it on all music platforms. BACK TO LOVE.”
Fans were quick to praise his hard work. x_olisa commented, “You are so cool man! And super inspiring..” Chaoana.lerato added, “This era suits you so much.” And thobi_mac wrote, “Everything g you touch always turns into gold … you were born for this.”
This is not Somizi’s first major fashion milestone. Last month, he celebrated his debut fashion show at the Durban Fashion Fair (DFF), unveiling the SOMPIRE FEMME AMANDAWU COLLECTION. Reflecting on his journey, he wrote, “Where do I start. I present to u SOMPIRE FEMME AMANDAWU COLLECTION. 2 and a half years ago I enrolled @villiotifashion as fashion design student. It started as one course which ended with 4 courses. I had to attend all of them 4 times a week over and above my daily gigs. Mc, radio, sompire business, tv, travelling etc. but I made it till the end.”
The show featured celebrities including award-winning content creator Mihlali Ndamase, reality TV star Sorisha Naidoo, media personality Sithelo, and his daughter, actress Bahumi. While Somizi launched Sompire Kids in 2023, his heart has always been set on designing for women. Through Sompire Femme, he celebrates women who embody elegance, strength, and bold self-expression. He explained, “It’s a blend of ready-to-wear and couture, inspired by the 2025 DFF theme, ‘The Awakening’. The collection features original prints. I dedicate this line to Amandlozi akithi, my ancestors.”
