Cassper Nyovest Opens Up About His Battle with Depression

South African rapper Cassper Nyovest has opened up about his personal battle with severe depression, sharing an emotional reflection on how his own experience changed the way he understands mental health and people who struggle in silence.

Taking to social media, Cassper Nyovest looked back on his previous views about suicide and admitted that he once judged people without truly understanding what they were going through.

“I used to judge people who commit suicide – wrongly. I thought they were selfish because they hurt the people they leave behind, because I never understood. I thought maybe they were weak or the problem was too big … until I went through it myself, until I went through depression.

“I was diagnosed with depression, and for the first time in my life I could not control my mind,” he said. “I started understanding why people say things like, ‘I just want it to end, I just want peace.’”

The rapper described the experience as feeling trapped in a place where there appeared to be no way out.

“I felt like there was no ending to this prison. For me personally, I turned to Jesus because I did not want to take medication, and it was not an overnight success or victory. It took time, but to find myself today in a place where I’m free. I love my life. I’ve let go of the concept of control, and I just take each day as it comes and everything is so meaningful.”

Casspe Nyovest’s experience has also encouraged him to speak directly to people who may currently be facing their own struggles. His message was one of patience, hope and holding on, particularly during moments when depression can make it difficult to imagine a better future.

“As much as it seems like it will never end, as much as it feels like you’re trapped, as much as it feels like there’s no solution to what you’re going through, it will pass. Jesus is the answer.”

By sharing such a deeply personal part of his life, Cassper Nyovest highlighted how experiencing depression firsthand changed his understanding of mental health. His story also serves as a reminder that struggles are not always visible and that people dealing with severe emotional distress may be fighting battles others cannot see.

For the rapper, reaching a place where he can say he is free and that he loves his life represents a significant change from the period when he felt imprisoned by his own thoughts.
