Influencer and YouTuber Snikiwe “Sni” Mhlongo has responded to recent allegations surrounding her detention, calling out false media reports and sharing her side of the story.
In a public statement, Sni confirmed that she was detained by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) on November 7 in Fourways on suspicion of exceeding the speed limit. However, she firmly denied claims that she was driving at 180km/h in a 60km/h zone, labeling the reports as “inaccurate and misleading.”
“I feel it is the perfect time to finally address the recent allegations that were first published by City Press dated 13th November 2024 by journalist Mduduzi Nonyane,” Mhlongo said. “While I am limited in what I can disclose due to the ongoing nature of the case, I want to emphasize that City Press and other media outlets have presented grossly inaccurate and misleading information about my detainment in a sensational manner.”
Sni addressed specific claims, stating:
• “I was NOT arrested for driving at 180km/h in a 60km/h zone as the mentioned journalist has falsely claimed whilst quoting an unnamed police officer.
• I did not refuse to be detained citing being a celebrity. I do not even consider myself one in everyday life, never mind mentioning it to a police officer.
• I was also not tested for alcohol consumption as the outlet yet again falsely claimed and I was NOT charged for driving under the influence. I also want to point out that indeed I do not consume alcohol.”
The influencer also expressed the toll the allegations have taken on her mental health, citing reputational damage and cyberbullying over the past week. “This has caused unimaginable mental health challenges in the last five days, including reputational damage from constant cyber abuse,” she shared.
Despite the challenges, Sni remains optimistic, thanking her fans, affectionately called her “Snacks,” as well as the brands that have continued to support her. “Your loyalty and belief in me during this challenging time mean more than words can express,” she said.
Sni promised a full and transparent update once the case is resolved and expressed her trust in the justice system. She also announced her return to work soon, saying, “I cannot wait to get back to doing what I love the most!”
