South African songstress Simphiwe Dana has quietly released her new album, MOYA, taking fans by surprise. The deeply personal project reflects a period of transformation, healing, and self-rediscovery for the artist. Its January release is symbolic, coinciding with the birth month of both Simphiwe and her mother—a time of reflection, letting go, and embracing new beginnings.
“Creating MOYA helped me let go of my stoicism,” Simphiwe shares. “It reminded me how important it is to feel your feelings instead of running from them. I realised I didn’t have to carry all my pain and anger—I could simply release it. MOYA was part of that journey.”
The album’s title, MOYA, captures the innocence and wonder of childhood while reconnecting Simphiwe to her spiritual self. It’s a musical compass guiding her back to balance after years of grief and frustration.
The lead single, “Mayenzeke,” sets the tone for the album, exploring themes of surrender, spiritual alignment, and the idea that true healing comes from facing grief rather than avoiding it.
“When I made MOYA, I was processing grief during a time when it felt almost selfish to share it,” Simphiwe reflects. “Many of us lost loved ones during COVID and navigated that sadness alone. I hope this album offers comfort, understanding, and a sense of healing to anyone feeling similar emotions. You are not alone.”
While Simphiwe doesn’t dictate how listeners should experience MOYA, the album is designed to soothe, calm, and bring peace, wherever someone might be on their personal journey.
