The South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs) have once again set the stage for an exciting celebration of the best in local talent. This year’s nominations, announced on SABC 3’s Expresso morning show and Newzroom Afrika, revealed a mix of record-breaking achievements, posthumous nods, and fresh talent making waves.
One of the standout stories is Thembinkosi Mthembu, who has made SAFTAs history by becoming the first actor to secure nominations for four different roles across four productions in a single year. Mthembu is nominated for:
– Best Actor in a Drama (Shaka iLembe)
– Best Actor in a Drama (Adulting)
– Best Actor in a Telenovela (Outlaws)
– Best Supporting Actor in a Telenovela (The River)
In a poignant moment, the late Connie Chiume has been honoured with a nomination for Best Actress in a Telenovela for her powerful portrayal in Gomora (Season 4), while the late Mpho Sebeng earned two posthumous nods: Best Supporting Actor in a Telenovela (The Estate) and Best Supporting Actor in a TV Comedy (Miseducation).
Sindi Dlathu continues to break records, solidifying her status as a SAFTAs icon. Nominated once again for her role as Lindiwe Dikana in The River, she has now received a nod for every season of the show, setting a record of six consecutive Best Actress in a Telenovela nominations.
Lasizwe is also making waves with his YouTube series Awkward Dates, earning a nomination for Best Online Content. Competing alongside him are Giving it Gears with Jason Goliath and The Adventures of Noko Mashaba – Struggles of SA Youth, proving that digital content is staking its claim in the industry.
The gripping docu-series Rosemary’s Hitlist, which details the chilling crimes of serial killer Nomia Rosemary Ndlovu, is up for Best Made for TV Documentary, with a nod also going to cinematographer Sims Phakisi for Best Achievement in Documentary Cinematography.
As the excitement builds, all eyes will be on nominees like Nomzamo Mbatha for Shaka iLembe and Kgomotso Christopher for Fatal Seduction, both competing for Best Actress in a TV Drama. With such an impressive lineup, this year’s SAFTAs are sure to be unforgettable!
