South African actress Petronella Tshuma recently opened up about the emotional pressure she faces as a Christian, especially when dealing with public criticism online.
In June, Petronella found herself caught in the middle of a social media storm after her best friend, actress Stephanie Sandows, announced her divorce from actor Hungani Ndlovu. Though she wasn’t directly involved in the situation, online users dragged Petronella’s name into the conversation, speculating about her possible role in the couple’s split.
According to TshisaLIVE, the actress shared how difficult it has been to deal with the backlash. She revealed that she had to block several hurtful comments and even turn off comments on some of her videos to protect her mental health. However, she admitted that some of the criticism really made her question how she should respond as a Christian.
“Being Christian is very hard. I think maybe to a certain extent it’s unfair. I really find the mental pressure that is on us as Christians is very hard,” she said in a video posted on TikTok.
“On my videos I’ve had to block a lot of comments to protect myself, and I’ve opened some of my comments in some of my videos.”
Petronella explained that her silence wasn’t because she had nothing to say. Instead, she chose to remain quiet because she didn’t want to act in a way that might misrepresent her faith.
“I’m not quiet because I can’t talk for myself or fight for myself. I’m quiet because there is so much I could say that I tell myself that it’s better I keep quiet. I really want to reflect Jesus as much as I can. I’m really reserved. I like to keep to myself.”
Despite everything, she firmly believes that Christians also have the right to protect themselves when attacked.
“As Christians we have every right to protect ourselves when we are being attacked.”
