Nomzamo shared her excitement on Instagram, saying: “The Global Citizen NOW Summit is heading to Spain on 29 June 2025. Hosted by @glbltzn in partnership with the government of Spain, the summit will gather leaders across sectors serving as a strategic catalyst and global stage to shape ideas, highlight financing reform and catalyze action towards investments in renewables across the African continent as well as development financing.

Incredibly fortunate to be trusted with hosting #GCNow and being in the incredible company of some of the most significant world leaders who hold truth to power. See you soon Sevilla.”

According to Vanguard, the Global Citizen NOW: Sevilla Summit will be hosted by Mbatha and will bring together world leaders, policy makers, and global thinkers. The event will focus on poverty, climate change, and development financing topics that have become even more urgent due to the current global challenges.

The summit is being held in partnership with the Spanish government and will take place at CaixaForum Sevilla, a well-known cultural and conference centre. It comes just before a major global event, the United Nations’ Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD4).

One of the key goals of the summit is to push for more investment in renewable energy across Africa. It also aims to support transformative changes in how development is financed, with the hope of creating a fairer financial system for the world’s poorest countries.

Spanish President Pedro Sánchez commented on the importance of the summit, saying: “World leaders need to work together within the multilateral framework to reshape the global financial architecture so it works for everyone, especially the world’s most vulnerable. Spain is proud to co-host Global Citizen NOW: Sevilla to drive bold, co-ordinated action to tackle the world’s biggest challenges and mobilise ambitious initiatives for sustainable development.”

This summit is part of Global Citizen’s year-long campaign to boost renewable energy in Africa. Working with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, President Cyril Ramaphosa, and the International Energy Agency, the campaign wants to:

  • Triple renewable energy capacity in Africa by 2030
  • Create 500,000 new green energy jobs
  • Help 600 million people who still don’t have electricity

The campaign will end with a pledging conference in November, held alongside the G20 summit.

Nomzamo Mbatha’s role as host shines a light on her growing global influence and commitment to bringing change not just in Africa, but around the world.
