A brand-new drama series titled Higher Grade is coming to SABC1 this September, and it’s packed with talent, powerful themes, and a gripping storyline that reflects real-life issues in South African schools.
Set in the township of Vosloorus in Ekurhuleni, Higher Grade follows the story of a struggling high school, Themba Lakusasa Secondary, as it faces a tough challenge. Schools in the area are under pressure from the education department to improve their matric pass rates. To do so, officials suggest removing maths and science — two of the most difficult but essential subjects. This controversial decision sparks a major debate: should schools focus on better pass rates, or fight to keep important subjects that prepare learners for real careers?
