Mihlali Ndamase, one of South Africa’s most prominent beauty influencers, recently found herself at the center of a social media storm after receiving backlash for using offensive language during a live video. Taking to Instagram, Ndamase issued what appeared to be a heartfelt apology, addressing the LGBTQIA+ community, many of whom form a significant part of her fan base.
In her apology, she said, “I would like to apologize to the LGBTQIA+ family; my intention was not to harm or offend you with the phrases used during my live. I acknowledge that a significant portion of my support comes from the LGBTQIA+ community, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the love and support you have shown me since the beginning of my career.”
Ndamase’s apology came after fans condemned her use of terms like “double adapter” and “Mr After Nine” during a recent broadcast, with many labeling her comments as homophobic. These phrases, often used to disparage LGBTQIA+ individuals, sparked outrage, with many pointing out the harm they cause to a community already facing widespread discrimination.
However, her apology hasn’t been universally accepted. Skeptics on social media have accused her of insincerity, speculating that her apology was timed to preserve her public image and brand partnerships. Just after issuing her apology, Ndamase posted a promotional reel for Fenty Beauty, leading some to believe that her apology was a calculated move to “secure the bag.”
On X (formerly Twitter), the reaction was largely critical. One user, @shanice_thusi, tweeted, “Mihlali posted that apology just so she can post her paid promo reel,” while another, @hoemie_, added, “If Mihlali truly has a PR team, they are ALL terrible at their jobs. That wasn’t even an apology. Like, what?”
The backlash didn’t end there. User @TKwazi questioned the authenticity of Ndamase’s remorse, stating, “The fact that you didn’t think about it when you were making that video speaks to how you really feel inside! Did you not consider that your friends would be offended?”
