South African singer and songwriter Lira recently delivered a memorable performance at the Rebirth of Ubuntu Concert held at Joburg Theatre.
The fifth edition of the Rebirth of Ubuntu concert, curated by guitarist Billy Monama, took place on May 29 and May 30, 2026. The event commemorated 50 years since the 1976 Youth Uprising and brought together talented artists to celebrate South Africa’s rich musical heritage while honouring legendary musicians who have shaped the country’s cultural identity.
Lira was among the performers who took to the stage to pay tribute to the late and iconic singer Miriam Makeba. Following the event, she shared special moments from the concert on Instagram and reflected on the significance of the performance.
“Another milestone performance for me! This experience revealed a challenge in learning Mirriam Makeba’s songs which I never sang before “Mama Ndiyalila” and “Amampodo”. I assumed it would be easy after singing her music through out my career. But it was challenging after the stroke.”
She continued by explaining how her recovery journey affected her experience while preparing for the performance.
“I have always been able to hear all languages I could previously speak before – and now that l’m speaking even better I did not anticipate that I would struggle with the words. Something happens with the translation from my brain to my mouth.”
“But it’s part of my recovery. I learned from this experience that there’s nothing I can’t do if I put my mind to and I have a little patience – and I did it !!!!!!!”
The concert also featured South African singer Zoë Modiga, who honoured the late music legend Busi Mhlongo during her performance.
Sharing her gratitude after the event, Modiga wrote on Instagram, “Under a full moon, it was honour to tribute Mam’ Busi Mhlongo alongside beloved musicians as we answered the call of rebirth to ubuntu! Thank you to the Rebirth of Ubuntu team, the whole cast, musicians, crew and audiences for having us.”
