In the clip, Gabela appears visibly emotional as he speaks directly to the public, appealing for compassion and understanding.
“I just want a decent life, like everyone else. That’s why I’m reaching out,” Gabela said through tears. “I want to engage with people and help grow the film industry, so upcoming performers don’t end up like us. I want their lives to be better. And I don’t want them to face the same struggles we do.”
The actor, known for his contributions to South Africa’s entertainment industry, expressed deep concern about the struggles many veteran actors face as they grow older. He pointed out that, sadly, the stories of industry legends often only gain attention after they have passed away — and those stories are too often filled with hardship and poverty.
His story has also reignited the conversation about the lack of financial security and long-term support for South African artists, particularly those who paved the way for the industry’s growth.
“All veteran actors, when they pass, you hear about how they struggled. Almost all of us, by the time we reach this age, become beggars,” Gabela shared. “It’s painful for me, because begging is very difficult for me. I just need help to live a decent life. I don’t need to be rich.”
Gabela’s plea highlights not only his personal struggles but also the wider issue of how the film and television industry supports — or fails to support — its older talent.
