Legendary South African music producer and composer Lebo M, whose real name is Lebohang Morake, celebrated his 61st birthday in a powerful and emotional way on Thursday night, 17 July. The celebration took place at Keyes Art Mile in Rosebank, north of Johannesburg, and was filled with stars, close friends, and fans from the entertainment industry.
Lebo M is best known around the world for his work on hit productions like The Lion King, The Power of One, and Outbreak. He is one of Africa’s most celebrated musical exports, and his voice and songwriting have touched millions of people around the world.
According to Daily Sun, the event was more than just a birthday celebration, it was the launch of a special exhibition titled The Dream and The Dreamer, which looks back at his life, achievements, and the many milestones in his career. The exhibition showcased rare and personal photographs, music memorabilia, and videos. It told the story of how a boy from Soweto rose to become an international music legend.
Speaking at the event, Lebo M reflected on his incredible journey and announced a new and exciting project, his autobiography.
“It’s been a lovely transition for me. We had a great year. Last year, I had my first concert in Cape Town, then went on tour, and even performed at the Hollywood Bowl. That project earned us three Emmy nominations, and it’s just the beginning. We’re now planning a second concert in Cape Town and then a world tour,” he shared.
The music star also spoke about the touching photo exhibition that gave fans a behind-the-scenes look into his life. He admitted that even he was surprised by some of the images.
“I have no say in the making of the film, and I like it that way. What is special to me about it is that Blaq Smith has been documenting my life for years, travelling with me around the world, and this is about his work and me being the subject,” he explained.
One of the biggest moments he recalled was being part of The Lion King’s 30-year anniversary. The celebration brought together the original Broadway cast and voices behind the animated film.
“That was a major highlight. It reminded me of how far the journey has come,” he said with pride.
