South African singer and songwriter Langa Mavuso has opened up about the emotional final moments he shared with his late partner, celebrity chef and TV personality Lentswe Bhengu-Mafoko. Speaking with deep honesty on Lungelo KM’s podcast, Mavuso revisited their last day together before Lentswe’s tragic passing on February 28, 2023, after a short illness. The couple had been together for seven beautiful years.
Reflecting on that heartbreaking day, Mavuso shared, “On the day he was supposed to fly into Cape Town to come and see me and to spend some time with me, I get a call from his sister, and his sister tells me that he’s not feeling well. I called my aunt, and my aunt goes over to his house and she finds the situation to be quite dire. She took him and his sister to the hospital.”
Moments later, Mavuso had a gut feeling that something was wrong. “I say to my director, I think he just died. I went back to the hotel, and I get the call that he died. It was quite tragic for me,” he said.
The Sunday Blues hitmaker also opened up about his emotional struggle following Lentswe’s death, offering a raw look at how grief can sometimes lead to self-destructive behavior.
“When I was going through a lot of grief, there was not a lot of peace in my life,” Mavuso shared. “When I was spending a lot of time with people that I shouldn’t have been spending time with, there wasn’t peace because sometimes distraction can be your best friend when you’re in chaos.”
Instead of confronting his emotions directly, Mavuso admitted that he tried to avoid his pain. “I had a season of mess where I was just going out a lot, drinking a lot, partying a lot,” he said.
