Ladysmith Black Mambazo Pays Tribute to Dolly Parton

South Africans and people around the world have been sharing heartfelt tributes following the passing of legendary American singer and songwriter Dolly Parton.

Parton passed away at the age of 80 on 25 August 2026, leaving behind a remarkable musical legacy that stretched across generations, borders and cultures. Among those remembering the country music icon is South Africa’s internationally acclaimed vocal group Ladysmith Black Mambazo, who shared a deeply personal tribute reflecting on their connection with the star.

The group’s relationship with Parton was not simply one of admiration. Ladysmith Black Mambazo sang and collaborated with Dolly Parton on multiple notable tracks, creating musical moments that brought together their distinctive vocal traditions.

One of their memorable collaborations was “Peace Train”, a cover of Cat Stevens’ song that appeared on Parton’s 1996 album Treasures, featuring the subtitle “Peace Train/Isitimela Sokuthula”. The group and Parton also performed the song together during a US television special in November 1996.

They also recorded “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door”, a rendition of the Bob Dylan classic, with Dolly Parton on lead vocals.
