Lady Du is mourning the loss of her beloved father, DJ Mbuyiselo ‘Choc’ Ngwenya. Their bond was always strong — from the days she admired his vinyl collection to the moment he encouraged her to become a DJ herself. It’s clear that DJ Choc passed on his passion for music to his daughter, and Lady Du has continued his legacy by becoming one of South Africa’s top artists.
However, Lady Du’s world has now been shattered. Her father passed away on 11 April at the age of 51.
DJ Choc had a long and successful career. Over the years, he worked with many well-known artists including DJ Clock, Mbuso Khoza, DJ Cleo, DJ Mashega, and Skipper Shabalala. He was one of the pioneers who helped shape the sound of kwaito and house music in South Africa. His creativity and love for music made him a respected figure in the industry.
In a heartfelt statement shared by Lady Du, the Ngwenya family asked for privacy during this painful time. The statement reads:
“It is with deep sorrow and immense respect that we confirm the passing of South African music legend, DJ Choc Ngwenya. A pioneer, a storyteller, and a pillar of the music community, DJ Choc’s influence stretched across generations and genres. His passion, creativity and commitment to uplifting South African sound and culture will be remembered forever.
He leaves behind a powerful legacy in the industry — and in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. At this time, the Ngwenya family kindly asks for privacy as they navigate this profound loss. We are grateful for the outpouring of love, support and tributes already shared.”
Since the sad news broke, many artists, organisations, and fans have sent their condolences to Lady Du and her family, showing just how much DJ Choc meant to the South African music world.
Lady Du herself has been open about the pain she’s feeling. She shared an emotional message about how hard it has been for her: “Day 3 of the most toughest days of my life. Baba we were so close now. God, why would you hurt me like this?”
She also told her followers that she is struggling to cope with the loss: “I’m a mess right now. I won’t be myself for some time. I ask you to understand and respect that. God bless you; I ask that you respect and love your families.”
As the tributes continue to pour in, fans and friends are standing by Lady Du during this heartbreaking time. The Ngwenya family has not yet announced the details for DJ Choc’s funeral and memorial service.
