Singer Kelly Khumalo opened up on Instagram about the challenges she faces as a single mom, raising a child who may resemble the very person who hurt her.
“There’s one thing we probably never talk about, especially as single moms. Raising children or a child of a man who physically abused you. Even more so if that child looks exactly like that person, how much of healing it takes to raise a child and see that child for who they are, not who their father is,” Khumalo explained.
She went on to discuss the strength required to overcome the emotional pain, especially when the abuser continues to cause harm, even from a distance. “How godly one has to be to see beyond what is a constant reminder of someone who hurt you… it’s even worse if that person continues to hurt you in their absence… But you continue to be a great mom, you choose to be a great mom, you choose to heal for your child’s sake.”
Khumalo emphasised the importance of seeing her child as an individual and not as a reminder of past pain: “At the end of the day, that child is not just the image of his or her father but your image too. So you choose to see you in them rather than the person who’s hurt you.”
In another Instagram post, Khumalo encouraged followers to protect their peace by distancing themselves from toxic relationships, no matter the source. “Block, delete, close the door and never speak to them again. Whether family or a friend or a follower or whoever it is, no one is worth losing your peace. Trust me, just block, just walk away, close the door, don’t look back.”
