Renowned talented artist Kay Kay Ribane, known as Kokona Ribane, attributes his bold creativity to his family upbringing. As part of the esteemed family creative trio, Dear Ribane, alongside sisters Tebogo and Manthe, Ribane has left an indelible mark on the creative landscape, collaborating with global brands like Gucci, G-Star RAW, and Chimi eyewear.

In an exclusive interview with Sowetan S Mag, Ribane reflects on the profound influence of his upbringing, stating, “Growing up, our perception of the world and creativity stemmed from home. Our parents instilled confidence in us, fostering an environment where our ideas mattered globally.”

Ribane’s creative journey extends beyond collaborations, as he has carved a niche for himself as a sartorial force, serving as a creative director, director, and performance artist. He is also the co-founder of Usurpa, Africa’s first digital gallery, and the founder of Mungu, a children’s clothing range inspired by his son, Kairo.

During the interview with Sowetan S Mag, Ribane also spoke about reflecting on the importance of creating from home and nurturing independence, Ribane emphasises the significance of owning one’s legacy. This character resonates in his collaboration with Motswako rapper Khuli Chana on the music video for “Khuliyano,” where Ribane’s creative vision inspires the visuals with a sense of royalty and luxury.

The music video, featuring dance performances by Ribane’s sisters and shot against iconic historical monuments, showcases Ribane’s commitment to redefining African visual storytelling. Looking ahead, Ribane also shared with Sowetan S Mag that he anticipates directing Khuli Chana’s performance at the Metro FM Music Awards, promising yet another captivating display of his creative prowess.

With roots firmly planted in family values and a vision set on pushing creative boundaries, Kay Kay Ribane continues to inspire and innovate, leaving an indelible imprint on the global cultural landscape.
