South African acting legend Dr. John Kani has reached another major milestone in his long and celebrated career. He has been officially elected as a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences — the organization behind the world-famous Oscars.
This makes him one of only a few South Africans ever to be selected for this honour. He now joins acclaimed film producer Anant Singh as the only living South Africans currently in the Academy. The late casting director Moonyeenn Lee was also a member. Alongside Kani and Singh, six other Africans, including Nigerian director Akin Omotoso, are part of this elite global circle.

In 2023, he was also awarded the honorary title of Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his outstanding contribution to drama.
Sharing the news on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Kani expressed his gratitude and sense of duty.

“I have the honour and pleasure to announce that I have been elected to serve as a Member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences-Oscars. I promise to serve this institution with honesty and integrity.”
According to IOL News, becoming a member of the Academy is no small feat. One cannot apply — instead, candidates must be nominated by two existing members of the Academy, from the same branch (such as acting, directing, or producing). Once nominated, the candidate’s name is reviewed by a special committee. If approved, it then goes to the Board of Governors for final confirmation. This process happens once a year during spring.
Kani’s appointment has sparked celebration across social media, with fans, fellow artists, and admirers sending him heartfelt messages.
One user, @MogapiTshiya, said: “Congratulations Elder! The Academy is truly honoured and blessed to have you among their ranks. I couldn’t think of a more fitting nomination.”
Another, @RaashisReflect, shared: “Fantastic and fabulous! A long time coming that Africa should be represented. And by who better than you. Salute! Respect!”
Dr. John Kani’s latest achievement is not just a personal win — it is a proud moment for South African and African cinema as a whole.
