Reyneke explained that part of her learning journey came from her past relationships. She admitted that she used to avoid talking about her stance early on, which later caused misunderstandings. “I think my biggest mistake in my previous relationships was not mentioning that soon enough. Now, I’ve learned. It’s a first day conversation,” she said. For her, being honest from the beginning is important so that no one enters the relationship expecting her to change her mind about marriage.
The actress also opened up about the experiences and beliefs that shaped her views. She said that growing up, she noticed how many married women around her seemed to lose parts of themselves. According to Reyneke, “All the married women were lesser than their men; they were almost shadows.” She added that even the role of being a bride felt uncomfortable to her, especially because of the traditional expectations placed on women. “Even the concept of being a bride, where you’re expected to do certain things for your husband’s family, but he does nothing for yours,” she explained.
Reyneke continued by expressing how some cultural expectations made marriage feel unbalanced. “You’re his slave. You are bought, you have to change your last name while your surname dies out. In my head, those notions have always been there,” she said. These ideas played a big part in shaping her belief that marriage is not something she wants for herself.
Although she does not believe in marriage, the mother of two made it clear that she respects people who do. She said she knows some people are “made for marriage” and fully supports their decisions, even if it is not the right path for her.
