South African actor and dancer Hungani Malcolm Ndlovu has shared exciting news with his fans. Taking to Instagram, he happily announced the return of his much-loved theatre production. He wrote, “MUSICAL CHAIRS IS BACK!! After an outstanding debut, this powerful South African production returns for a second run!”
In a statement, Hungani explained that the production had left a lasting impression during its first season. He said, “After an outstanding debut season that left audiences on their feet, MUSICAL CHAIRS returns to Theatre On The Square in Sandton for a highly anticipated second run. BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND, this groundbreaking South African production continues to cement its place as a vital contribution to contemporary theatre. Blending street dance, raw emotion, audience engagement, and most importantly, social commentary.”
The play takes the well-known childhood game of musical chairs and reimagines it in a powerful way. Hungani described it as, “a powerful testament of intimacy, understanding, and shared rhythm.” It offers fun for the whole family while also sparking deep thought for adults.
This season, Hungani and co-creator Genesis Shirindza will also host talks in Johannesburg. These discussions will explore the modern role of theatre and how it continues to influence the arts. The talks are scheduled to take place between 8 and 15 October at Bertrand’s Cafe in Maboneng and the Everard Read Gallery in Rosebank.
Sharing more about the heart of the production, Hungani said, “This play isn’t just about the game. It’s about belonging, and the human need to be seen. We’ve all played musical chairs, but on stage, it becomes a mirror of life itself.”
The Hungani Ndlovu Foundation, which he launched earlier this month, will also play a role during this run. The foundation will host a sneaker collection drive, encouraging audience members to donate pairs to those in need. “Every pair of sneakers tells a story. Share yours,” the actor urged.
The show Musical Chairs will be staged at Theatre On The Square in Sandton from 22 October to 08 November, with tickets available for purchase on Webtickets.
Hungani also expressed his passion for his new foundation, writing, “A New Chapter Begins. The HUNGANI NDLOVU FOUNDATION is here!! – a movement for youth development and men’s wellness. Our logo is more than just a symbol. It’s a promise: to break stigmas, to create safe spaces and to help others thrive. Walk with us! Heal with us! Grow with us!”
