Enhle Mbali Issues Heartfelt Apology After Using Racial Slur at Hair Event

Enhle Mbali has found herself in the middle of controversy after a comment she made during the launch of her new partnership with Carlton Hair. The award-winning actress and fashion designer referred to her hair as “k*fir hare” while addressing attendees at the Hyde Park event, sparking outrage online.

“Listen, it’s the new South Africa and I’m allowed to say this. I’ve got k**ir hare. And the black people know exactly what I mean and the coloured people know exactly what I mean as well,” Enhle told the audience.

The moment was captured on video and quickly made its way to social media, where many South Africans expressed shock and disappointment over her use of the racial slur. Critics pointed out that the term carries deep historical pain and should never be used to describe ethnic hair.

In response to the backlash, Enhle Mbali took to social media to apologise, sharing a video with her followers. “I am posting this video to express my heartfelt apology as a black South African woman, for offending members of the South African community during my speech, as that was far from my intention,” she wrote.

She went on to explain the context behind her words: “The K word as it’s formally known, is still a sticky one with lots of history behind it. I spoke in the language (terminology) that we commonly used where I grew up. We rendered the K word’s humiliation untrue, therefore it was never owned space.”

Enhle emphasised that she never intended to belittle or insult anyone. “My intention was not to dismiss or demean any community while sharing my personal experiences. With that being said, I fully understand this is not the case for everyone. Once again, my sincerest apology.”

The incident overshadowed what was meant to be a celebratory moment for Enhle. Just days before, she had proudly announced her new ambassador deal with Carlton Hair South Africa, becoming the face of their newly launched ethnic hair division. “Last night was beautiful. I am excited to announce that I, Enhle Mbali, am the face of Carlton Hair SA. Yes, they work on and with ethnic hair now, dressed by Essie Apparel Couture,” she posted on Instagram.

In response to the incident, Carlton Hair released a strong statement on Instagram condemning her remarks. “Carlton Hair is deeply committed to celebrating the beauty, strength, and diversity of hair in all its forms. We unequivocally condemn any form of ethnic derogation or self-deprecation that perpetuates harmful stereotypes,” the statement read.

The brand confirmed that it had paused all promotional content featuring Enhle and would review its partnership guidelines.

“We extend our sincere regret to anyone offended or hurt by these words, particularly within the Black community whose natural beauty we proudly champion. Moving forward, we will prioritise collaborations with voices that authentically amplify empowerment and cultural pride,” the statement concluded.
