Black Twitter Outraged After Poet Lebo Mashile Receives COVID-19 Vaccination. Social media is livid after award wining poet and activist Lebo Mashile revealed that she has been vaccinated for the Coronavirus on Wednesday at the Barangwanath Hospital in Johannesburg. In the twitter thread, she opened up about her experience whilst getting vaccinated and also shed more info of what extent the vaccine will protect one to.
In the thread, she shared that she received the vaccine along with frontline healthcare workers and she was very nervous in the last 24 hours since getting the shot. She further educated her followers by sharing that the vaccine will not prevent you from contracting the virus, but if once you do, you will not get sick to the point where you may even die.
“I woke up before dawn to head to Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto to get a vaccine along with frontline healthcare workers. I am here to share my experiences and raise awareness about the process. My heart has been through a rollercoaster of emotions in the last 24 hours“
“Getting the vaccine does not make me immune to COVID. I still have to play it safe by wearing a mask in public, social distancing, and sanitizing my hands. Being vaccinated means that should contract COVID, I won’t end up in hospital on a ventilator, & I will not die. I’ll live” she wrote.
In the thread, Mashile shared that she got vaccinated to help protect her family, as she is the breadwinner whom many depend on. The nature of her profession forces her to interact with many people on the daily, therefore increasing the chance of her contracting the virus and she would hate spreading the virus amongst her family.
“I am a mother and a breadwinner. I have an extended family network that depends on me. I am also the one most likely to bring COVID home, because I have the most interactions with people outside. I need to be around to raise my kids and take care of the people I love most” she wrote.
The people of twitter have since raised an eyebrow as to how she out of all the celebs qualified to be part of the vaccination program. Lebo responded to the questions sharing that she is part of an organization named African Alliance that aims to educate the masses about the vaccine through the use of social media. The company aims at advocating equal vaccination for all, especially under privileged black people who volunteered to be part of the vaccine trials.
“African Alliance is a health advocacy organization. These are the people who have been fighting to make sure that the same people who have had their bodies used in vaccine trials in this country, namely poor Black people, are able to get the vaccine” she wrote.
Needless to say that the masses are in their feeling that Lebo may have gotten the vaccine even before some of the frontline workers and this what they had to say.
