AKA’s Mom Lynn Forbes Opens Up About Her Love Life

Lynn Forbes, the mother of the late South African rapper Kiernan “AKA” Forbes, has shared a deeply personal look into her love life and the journey she’s on now. Speaking on the Ikigai Awakening Podcast, Lynn reflected on her past relationships, her divorce from ex-husband Tony Forbes, and what she hopes for in the future.

Opening up about where she stands now, Lynn said, “I’m not married, I don’t have a partner and I’m not in a relationship. I can remember in the months following Kiernan’s death where I would get home and I loved getting home because it was just quiet, but you know what I missed? I missed somebody just running a bath for me. I just wanted to be held. I wanted to have somebody making a cup of tea for me and I didn’t want to do it myself. I still want that.”

With a touch of humor, she added, “If anybody’s out there.”

However, Lynn made it clear that she’s not actively looking for love right now. For her, the focus is on self-growth. “It’s not something I’m searching for. I believe that right now I just need to become the right person for the right person. For me first, so this is not just about a romantic relationship. It’s about anything — it’s about friendship. I need to become the right friend. I need to become the right friend that I need to be. I need to become first everything and everybody that I want to attract in my life. And that’s my journey.”

Her openness about love comes months after Tony Forbes, AKA’s father, also reflected on their marriage. In an early 2024 interview on the Within The Hazel podcast, Tony admitted that he had not been the best husband to Lynn. He accepted responsibility for the breakdown of their 20-year marriage.

“With Lynn and I, after 20 years of marriage, I wasn’t the best husband, let me just put this out there first. I think her primary love language was spending time. In our relationship, I think Lynn valued quality time. At the time I was not spending quality time with her… I was doing me,” he confessed.

While both Lynn and Tony have been open about their past mistakes and heartbreak, Lynn’s words show she is focused on healing, self-love, and becoming the person she wants to be — whether or not a new relationship comes along.
