Natasha Thahane Responds To Backlash Over R1 Million Government Funding To Study In America. The topic around the cost of good education is still a constant fight considering the on going fees must Fall protests. The government has also failed many students when it comes to allocating funds for qualifications, which is why Natasha Thahane’s R1 million government funding has done more than piss the public off.
Following Natasha’s recent MacG interview, social media users were livid when they learned that Natasha’s New York Film Academy course in America was funded by the government. A few years ago, Natasha who is related to Arch Bishop Desmond Tutu took off to New York to complete her studies at the prestigious academy. The Blood And Water actress has now spilt the beans about how it all happened.
In the interview, Thahane shared that after not signing her contract with The Queen in 2017, she reached out to the government to Baleka Mbete who was the speaker of parliament and the ANC chairperson at the time to assist her in getting the funds. Mbete the reached out to the department of arts to arrange the money that went towards Natasha’s study’s.
“I asked Mam’ Baleka (Mbete) and was like, ‘Mama, I need to go back to school. I’ve been accepted… I don’t know what I’m going to do, can I have funds? Please arrange something for me.’ She managed to speak to (the department) Arts and Culture and they were able to help me,” she said.
Social media users were beyond livid by Natasha’s privilege saying that the actress simply highlighted how the government is fuelled by corruption and nepotism, and doesn’t care about the people and the struggles that they are experiencing.
The Isono actress has since responded to the outcry, sharing proof of the lengths that she went to when trying to get funding for her education. The actress claims she didn’t receive any responses until the she was put into contact with the department by the school.
Natasha revealed that she even reached out to former president Barack Obama’s foundation with the hopes of getting assistance, but they also didn’t get back to her.
“I applied for funding, no one responded. Until the school assisted me get in contact with the department. I even emailed Barack Obama’s Foundation hoping I’d get assistance” she wrote.
The actress is still getting roasted by social media users despite her justification for the alleged nepotism and we are very interested in how this is all going to play out in the end.
