Ayanda Borotho Explains Why Her Kids Do Not Speak English At Home! Ayanda doesn’t bite her tongue whether she’s weighing in on the trending topics or sharing her beliefs.

In her recent rant on Instagram, the Isibaya actress addressed the issue of kids speaking English at home and explained why there is a NO english policy in her household.

“Anyone that knows me well will know that I have a ZERO English policy in my house. I went to model c schools from standard 1/ grade ntonton and I NEVER spoke english at home. A few years ago my now 5 year old son was ready for nursery school. After 2 weeks of going, I took him out. The fact that English had begun eroding his mother tongue freaked me out,” she said.

Ayanda added that her kids speak proper Sotho and Zulu and she had delayed nursery school for this reason. She shared that the little English they knew is from cartoons they watch.

The actress shared that she has had issues with black people who look at her like she’s weird when they speak to her kids in English and she kindly ask them to speak zulu or sotho.

I honestly don’t want anyone feeling judged by this post, these are my personal views and no one has to do what I prescribe to in my life. Anyone that knows me well will know that I have a ZERO English policy in my house. I went to model c schools from standard 1/ grade ntonton and I NEVER spoke english at home. A few years ago my now 5 year old son was ready for nursery school. After 2 weeks of going, I took him out. The fact that English had begun eroding his mother tongue freaked me out. And I have delayed nursery school for this reason. All my kids speak proper Sotho and Zulu. It’s their default language. The little English my boys know they have picked up from cartoons on T.V (which we also limit for this very reason). The boys started swimming last year. The white instructor came to me after the 1st or 2nd lesson and asked” your son doesn’t understand English.” I responded “yes” and she asked why. I simply answered “he’s a mo sotho boy born of a Zulu mother. He speaks HIS languages.” She seemed shocked initially and then said…”wow you do what the Portuguese do. Those kids walk from the car speaking Portugeuse to their parents. They speak English in the pool and as soon as they leave they switch to Portuguese.” Of course I was not surprised by this. To cut a long post short, I’ve had issues with my own people (black) look at me like I’m weird when they speak to my kids in English and I kindly ask them to speak zulu or sotho (laaark you will have a much better convo with them). I don’t understand this attitude. Isingisi asinanhlonipho for one. “Hi Mom” and “Sawubona Ma” are two VERY different things (again…my opinion).Language is our first point of connection with WHO we are. There’s so much of our IDENTITY as ‘a people’ that is imbeded in our languages. The truth is …when these kids come of age (early 20s)and are grappling with identity, which we all go through at some stage, they will blame us for robbing them of a very core and intimate part of WHO they are and of one that connects them with WHO WE ARE TO THEM. The world is doing all it can to rid us of our languages in schools and we WE are aiding the agenda. Silele.
