South African actress and singer Shalate Sekhabi has another reason to celebrate after receiving recognition at the Africa Choice Awards, where she was named Next Rated Female Movie Star of the Year.
The exciting announcement was shared on the awards organisation’s social media page, with Shalate receiving praise for her talent and growing presence on screen.
“Congratulations to @shalatesekhabi, Next Rated Female Movie Star of the Year! Your talent, promise and growing presence on screen make this recognition truly special. The journey continues!”
The actress was equally excited about the achievement and took to her Instagram story to acknowledge the win. She also expressed her appreciation to everyone who voted for her and helped make the recognition possible.
“Thank you for all your votes! The title of this award is so fitting!”
Shalate is best known for playing Shoki in House of Zwide. She has also appeared in The River as Millicent, Rhythm City, Netflix’s Go! as Nthabi, and the 2023 film Kleva-ish as Ipeleng. Her Africa Choice Award win celebrates her growing presence in the entertainment industry.
The Africa Choice Awards is an annual accolade presented by ACA Media. The organisation celebrates entertainment and television talent working both behind and in front of the cameras. It also represents an investment in developing skills and talent across the African continent.
However, the organisation recently announced that its planned physical awards ceremony in South Africa would not take place for the 2026 edition, instead, the winners would be announced digitally.
In a statement, the organisation explained: “Africa Choice Awards announces that it will not proceed with the planned physical awards ceremony in South Africa for its 2026 edition. The awards will instead move to a digital format, with the winners to be announced online on Monday, 26 October 2026.
This decision follows sustained efforts to bring the physical ceremony to life. Throughout the planning process, the organisation has explored every possible avenue to make the event happen. However, a series of unforeseen circumstances and challenges beyond its control have continued to stand in the way of delivering the ceremony as intended.”
Despite the change, the awards organisation reaffirmed its commitment to celebrating African talent and its contributions to the entertainment industry.
“Africa Choice Awards remains committed to its mission of recognising outstanding individuals and organisations contributing to Africa*s cultural, creative and entertainment landscape.”
The organisation also confirmed that each winner was contacted privately to discuss arrangements for the delivery of their award trophy.
For Shalate, the award adds another achievement to a career that has seen her move from television roles to becoming a recognised name in South African entertainment.
