South African kwaito musician, songwriter and actor Kabelo Mabalane is using his love for music to raise awareness about the human papillomavirus (HPV) through a special song created for an awareness campaign.
The musician recently shared a video on social media, giving his followers a glimpse into the studio as he worked on the track. The song aims to encourage more people to learn about HPV and start important conversations about the virus.
In the video, Kabelo explained the thinking behind the project, saying, “We’re just creating the song for a HPV campaign. We need to find rhythm of delivering this piece because it’s such a difficult subject matter.”
His wife, actress Gail Mabalane, also shared her thoughts on the initiative, highlighting the importance of making conversations about HPV part of everyday life.
“I think it’s really cool because it gets to make this conversation everyday,” she said.
Gail explained that discussions about HPV should not only happen when a serious health situation arises. Instead, she believes friends and families should feel comfortable talking about the subject regularly. She also welcomed the opportunity to raise awareness among younger generations.
Taking to his social media caption, Kabelo revealed that he had been working hard in the studio to create what he described as a special, one-of-a-kind song. Although he promised another upbeat track, he explained that this project carries an important message beyond the music.
“To raise awareness and conversation about the HUMAN PAPILLOMAVIRUS a.k.a. HPV,” he wrote, explaining the purpose behind the song.
Kabelo also shared that cancer has affected people within his family and close circle of friends, making the campaign particularly meaningful to him. He believes opportunities to bring attention to the subject should be embraced, especially when they encourage people to make informed health decisions.
The musician is supporting an HPV awareness initiative by MSD, which aims to increase public understanding of the virus and encourage open conversations about prevention.
HPV is a common virus that can affect both women and men. Many people may have it without knowing because it often causes no visible symptoms. Although most infections clear on their own, certain types of HPV can lead to cervical cancer.
Kabelo emphasised that HPV is a shared public health concern and that everyone has a role to play in awareness and prevention. He also encouraged people to speak to their healthcare providers about HPV and HPV vaccination.
The song is expected to be released on Spotify and Apple Music following a final announcement, with Kabelo encouraging his followers to stay tuned.
Through this project, the musician hopes to use music to make conversations about HPV more accessible and encourage people to take their health seriously.
