Black Coffee Explains Why His Music Has Changed

Grammy Award-winning DJ Black Coffee has opened up about the evolution of his music, explaining why his sound today is different from the music he created in the earlier 2000s.

The South African DJ and producer recently found himself responding to a fan who said they missed his “old sound”, prompting him to explain the creative process behind his music and why listeners should embrace his evolution as an artist.

On X, @Lesedi_Larona tagged Black Coffee and tweeted, “I miss your old sound,” accompanied by a sad face emoji.

Black Coffee responded by explaining that his music is closely connected to what is happening around him and within him at the time he creates.

“Hi Lesedi, I thought I’ll explain how I create, most of my creations is inspired by my environment, my emotional state, and whatever that is in my heart and head at the period of creation, basically whatever I made in 2009 1 can’t make again in 2026,as a music lover and creater I grow and evolve, which is why the catalogue is documented so we can all go back to it, I’m explaining this to you because I love you and with all the negativity that’s on this app, your message was from a good place and I apologize if my response was harsh.”

His response sparked further conversation among fans, with many agreeing that an artist naturally changes as they grow, both personally and creatively.

One fan, @lloydd_, suggested that Black Coffee revisit one of his most celebrated projects with a special concert.

Another fan praised the DJ for continuing to evolve while representing South Africa internationally.
