The film is directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and is based on the bestselling novel by Tomi Adeyemi. It tells the story of a young woman named Zelie, played by Thuso Mbedu, who goes on a mission to bring back the magic that was taken from her people by a powerful ruler.
Before the movie reaches cinemas, Thuso Mbedu and director Gina Prince-Bythewood will open the 24th annual Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival (MVAAFF). They will debut exclusive footage from Children of Blood and Bone on 7 August 2026. After the special presentation, the two will also take part in a Color of Conversation panel. The movie was filmed in South Africa.
Set in a mythical African kingdom, the story follows Zelie and her brother Tzain, played by Tosin Cole, as they join forces with Princess Amari, played by Amandla Stenberg, and Prince Inan, played by Damson Idris. Together, they fight against the rule of King Saran on a journey filled with danger, courage, and hope.

Speaking to ESSENCE about working with Thuso again, director Gina Prince-Bythewood praised the South African star. She said, “I knew as soon as I got this gig that Thuso was going to be Zélie. She is a generational talent, and was so phenomenal in The Woman King.”
