For many South Africans, the tournament carries special significance. Sixteen years after their last appearance at the global showpiece, Bafana Bafana are back on football’s grandest stage. Their return marks the first time South Africa will compete in the FIFA World Cup since 2010, when the country proudly hosted the tournament.

South Africa’s opening match will take place on Thursday, 11 June 2026, against host nation Mexico. The highly anticipated clash will kick off at 21:00 SAST at the historic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, one of football’s most iconic stadiums.

The occasion is expected to unite the nation as millions of supporters gather behind the team. Bafana Bafana will carry not only the hopes of their players and coaching staff but also the dreams of a football-loving nation eager to create new memories on the world stage.

Adding even more excitement to the tournament’s opening celebrations is South African music sensation Tyla. The global star is set to take her talent to one of the world’s biggest sporting stages after being confirmed for the opening festivities of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Tyla is expected to perform in both Mexico City and Los Angeles as part of the tournament’s celebrations. On 11 June 2026, she will perform at the iconic Estadio Azteca ahead of the opening match between Mexico and South Africa.

With world-class football, a returning Bafana Bafana squad, star-studded entertainment and comprehensive coverage led by Vusiwe Ngcobo and Andile Ncube, South Africans can look forward to an unforgettable FIFA World Cup experience.
